Indonesian Cuisine: Mouth-Watering Recipe for Halal Pecel Lele

Pecel lele is a popular Indonesian dish that is widely available in street stalls and restaurants. It consists of fried catfish served with a delicious peanut sauce, fresh vegetables, and rice. While traditional pecel lele may not be halal, it is possible to make a halal version by substituting the catfish with other permissible fish, such as tilapia or cod.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound tilapia or cod fillets, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon kecap manis (sweet soy sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Fresh vegetables, such as cucumber, cabbage, and bean sprouts
  • Rice, for serving

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. In a shallow dish, combine the flour, salt, and pepper.
  3. Dredge the fish pieces in the flour mixture.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Fry the fish pieces until golden brown and crispy, about 5 minutes per side.
  6. Transfer the fried fish to a paper towel-lined plate to drain the excess oil.
  7. To make the peanut sauce, combine the peanut butter, water, kecap manis, tamarind paste, chili powder, cumin, coriander, and salt in a blender or food processor.
  8. Blend until smooth and creamy.
  9. To assemble the pecel lele, place a serving of rice on a plate.
  10. Top with the fried fish, peanut sauce, and fresh vegetables.
  11. Serve immediately.

Tips:

  • For a more authentic flavor, use fresh turmeric and galangal in the peanut sauce.
  • You can adjust the spiciness of the peanut sauce by adding more or less chili powder.
  • Pecel lele is a great dish to serve with a side of sambal, a spicy Indonesian condiment made from chili peppers.
  • If you don't have a blender or food processor, you can make the peanut sauce by hand. Simply whisk all of the ingredients together until smooth.
